SHS Should Host More Pep Rallies

In previous years, SHS held a number of pep rallies throughout the school year. Now there is one pep rally hosted by the Student Council, and it takes place during the half-day before Thanksgiving. This limits the students from expressing themselves and getting closer to their peers. According to Mr. Duffey, pep rallies are the only time the entire school is able to be together. By limiting the number of pep rallies we have each year, the entire school isn’t able to bond and be together as one. By limiting the interaction between grades, we are dividing more than unifying Scituate High School.

There are many benefits that come with having pep rallies. According to freshman Emily Davis, pep rallies allow students to develop school spirit and spend time with their friends. They also  make students realize that we are one as a student body.

Some teachers and administrators might argue that one pep rally per year is sufficient, due to the decrease in time on learning. They may also suggest that pep rallies tend to divide the  students because of the competition between grades. However, if there is more time allotted for the entire school to spend together, the student body will be more united as one.

In our opinion, pep rallies should be longer and more frequent in order to include more students. Instead of holding separate grade assemblies and activities before the pep rally, the Thanksgiving pep rally should last the whole school day. Pep rallies should involve more students who want to participate. By adding more pep rallies for the students throughout the school year, school spirit will increase. Additional pep rallies will bring the school together, allow more students to get involved, and create a happier learning environment for the students of SHS.
