The 2020-2021 school year proved to be very challenging and resulted in a lot of adjustments for teachers and staff alike. The library was one of the biggest changes around the school, transitioning from the fun, collaborative space it once was to a quiet, isolating place as a result of the pandemic. During the 2021-2022 academic year, however, the library has been revived to resemble that of the pre-pandemic years–if not better.

In her new role as SHS librarian, Tracey Newman has revamped the space, adding board games, puzzles, and live streams of playful animals for students’ amusement. Consequently, students crowd the library during almost every block of the day. Nevertheless, Newman modestly suggested it is “the comfy furniture” drawing students from study halls held in traditionally furnished classrooms. Taking little credit for the library’s transformation, Newman explained, “The tables allow you to have everything in front of you,” which is one reason for its popularity.

Due in large part to a grant from SHORE, the SHS library was re-furnished with new comfortable seats, large couches, and individual and group tables. This new seating has been extremely popular with students: “I love that I can hang out and collaborate with my friends,” explained sophomore Lexi Washburn. Similarly, sophomore Claire Kennedy recognized that “the furniture in here is a lot nicer than last year.”

The library has become the “watering hole” for SHS students–largely thanks to Newman and her efforts. According to students, Newman cares about every student, and she is there to assist them however she can. During the first semester, Newman made a notable effort to get to know everyone who spends time in the library–even with the ever-present obstacle of masks. With a new library environment at SHS, a whole new door has been opened for SHS students who feel the atmosphere will only continue to improve under Newman’s guidance.
