Gay-Straight Alliance Sponsors SHS Showcase

On Monday, May 15th, the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) sponsored a full day of informative presentations at the high school library to spark awareness of the LBGTQ+ community. Junior Anna Svensen, who helped establish the group at SHS, explained that the GSA wanted to “showcase what we’ve been working on all year.”

Svenson and SHS junior Callie Moos gave a riveting presentation on the essentials of creating a safe environment for all people, regardless of sexuality or gender. Svenson also described the significant growth within this student-run club over the past few years. “Freshman year was just me and five of my friends,” she said, referring to the club’s humble beginnings. “Now we actually have elected positions,” she added.  Svenson stated that during her freshman year, the club had eleven students; however, today the club has transformed into a more official and active group.

Members of the GSA hope to make a positive change within the Scituate community and Scituate High School. According to Svensen, the intention of the group is to promote attention and educate the school on the societal issues and misconceptions surrounding the LGBTQ community. She hopes additional members will join the club and there will be an overall acceptance for all members of the LGBTQ community.
