Best of Luck, Deb! SHS Icon Retires

On October 20, 2018, Scituate High School bid farewell to a memorable and friendly face. Deborah Lyons, better known as  “Deb” among student-athletes, is the former athletic trainer at Scituate High School. Every student who has participated in SHS athletics knows Lyons and has interacted with her at some point.  According to Scituate High School Athletic Director Bill Luette, “Deb is kind of an icon.”

Lyons has been working at the high school since 2010, but she has been an athletic trainer for 43 years. She was the first female athletic trainer of Boston University. As Lyons turns 65, she believes it’s time to retire and enjoy other aspects of life. “You get to a point in life where you may want to try something out, rather than working 24/7,” she said. Lyons hopes the SHS administration “continues to support and build sports medicine,” adding, “it can only benefit the students here.”

In the years to come, Lyons plans to invest more time in her pet sitting business and “ramp up the clients a little bit more.”  She also plans to take a vacation, preferably a motorcycle trip to New Mexico and Colorado at the end of August.

When Lyons was asked about her favorite memory at Scituate High School, she laughed and said, “The kids–it’s always the athletes.”  “The athletes always entertain me,” she said.

Although Lyons will no longer be in her hallway between the big and small gyms, she is not leaving Scituate forever. Parents, students and staff will still be able to catch her in the crowd during football games. “I can be a spectator now,” she exclaimed, “I can be obnoxious in the crowd like you guys!”

The high school administration, students, and alumni wish Lyons all the best as she enters the next chapter of her life.  Luette spoke on behalf of Scituate High School when he said, “I am going to miss her–we all are.”
