SHS Senior Sarah Beal is an accomplished student-athlete, who has a strong toolkit of skills that she displays with her involvement in various activities. With several different jobs outside of school, she is a highly motivated individual who seeks adventure and welcomes new opportunities. In particular, Beal has made a name for herself through her work on a local lobster boat, “Island Girl.”
Beal said her father grew up on a farm in Abington, MA, where money didn’t necessarily come easily. He became accustomed to fishing and hunting, as it was an “easy way to fill up the freezer.” Beal’s father helped her develop an interest in fishing. She noted, “I’ve always been a team with my dad,” which explains how she learned so quickly, having been given advice from someone she trusts the most.
Beal revealed that it was also her dad who initially inspired her to get the job on the lobster boat. One day of needing an extra person to fill in turned into the next four years of her life, or at least an annual commitment spanning May through January. Despite the long hours on the boat, she expressed her love for being on the water, specifically the “chill and laid-back” atmosphere that the boat provides as her interest grows with each passing season.
According to Beal, being a female on a boat doesn’t come easy. Although she can “fully pull” her own weight as a member of the crew, she still feels like “a little sister” with a caring team around her in case she needs help, which isn’t often. Although she felt she had to learn a lot on her own at first, her crew mates always treated her like family.
The bond Beal shares with her family and those close to her is inspiring, and she feels these individuals helped shape her future. In the fall, Beal will attend Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where she plans to major in marine transportation. A committed athlete, she is looking forward to joining the women’s lacrosse team.
