The holiday season has finally arrived and everyone wants to do something to give back and make the season a little brighter for everyone, and there are plenty of ways to do so. One way is by sending holiday cards to Addie, a terminally ill six year old living in Utah. Doctors said Addie has an incurable and undiagnosed illness that may very well mean this holiday will be her last. The illness stopped her growth at the age of three. She weighs less than 25 pounds and finds difficulty walking and sleeping. She rarely talks anymore. Her illness also causes behavior problems, making her unable to play with other kids.
Addie had talked about wanting to have friends like her sisters, so her grandmother came up with an idea to cheer her up. Using social media, her grandmother made an appeal to the general public; please make holiday cards to show her how much you care. This media campaign is working: more than 1,000 cards arrive a day for Addie, and they come from all over the world.
“I think that Addie should get a card from each and every person in our school,” said junior Tom Bouchie, “I mean if it’s gonna be her last Christmas we might as well do our part to make it the best Christmas possible for her because she deserves it.” When sophomore Taylor Latwas was asked about the card making opportunity she said, “It’s very sad and I think a lot of students would and should participate in it because we know it would make her day and if you put yourself in her position imagine how happy you’d be. And I think everyone would be eager to participate to get together as a community and write cards to her. I think it would really put a smile on her face.” Help put a smile on Addie’s face by making her a card.
