In past elections, candidates for each of the parties have been chosen well before the infamous Super Tuesday, a day notorious for having the bulk of primary elections, traditionally the first Tuesday of March. However, unlike tradition after 2012’s Super Tuesday has come and gone, it still seems as though the Republican party has not been able to pick a candidate to run against the incumbent Democrat Barack Obama.
Although Romney has secured the largest portion of delegates, he has failed to obtain concrete support in the South and the Midwest. Romney has only won Midwestern battle ground states such as Ohio and Michigan by a small margin against Rick Santorum, while out spending all other candidates by a margin greater than two to one. Romney has gotten support from Independents and moderate conservatives but has failed to woo the “ very conservative” demographic. This group has tended to lean towards Rick Santorum.
On Super Tuesday Romney won six out of the 10 primaries but failed to make any real push for proving he could get conservatives to nominate him. Romney won Massachusetts by more than 70 percent which isn’t surprising considering he is the former governor. Additionally, in Virgina Romney won more than 60 percent of the vote. This victory is not as impressive as it may seem, since Mitt Romney was only on the ballot opposing Ron Paul. Ron Paul got almost 40 percent of the vote, the most he has ever received as well as winning over the majority of Independents.
This shows how skeptical many people are of having Romney as a nominee. Romney has shown a consistent problem with getting a solid base in the South with his only victories in Virgina and Florida, while losing Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia to Rick Santourm and Newt Gingrich. In the all of these contests he outspent both candidates and only received third place.
Regardless of all of these unfortunate outcomes for Mitt it seems unlikely he will lose the nomination. In order for Romney to lose, Gingrich would have to drop out of the race. Gingrich has shown no recent interest in dropping out and is being kept on life support by many GOP donors. So as much as Repubican’s and I hate the idea of Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney; we should all accept Mitt’s fate and go get our bumper stickers.
