Every spring the South Shore gets the chance to see a few professional and community productions of dramatic favorites. If you want a warmup for SHS’s production of 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, there are a few opportunities to fill up on musical joy in productions which involve SHS students outside of our own auditorium. Right in the middle of the spring dramatic season, now is the time to go out and see some spectacular shows.
“The Wedding Singer” at the Company Theater in Norwell, features freshman Roger Dawley in a cast of professional adult actors. The show will run through April 7th ($35, all seats). It’s a typical romantic comedy in which a performer falls in love with the bride, set to catchy tunes and a brilliantly written script. Performances run March 16 to April 7.
“RENT” at Hingham Civic Music Theatre will showcase senior Andrew Lemieux. Premiering Friday April 13th, the opening night (“Fight for a Cure Friday”) aims to raise money for the National Marfan Foundation. The NFM supports research to cure Marfan’s Syndrome, which took the life of RENT’s playwright soon before the show’s first premiere on Broadway. RENT focuses on the lives of an eclectic cast living in New York’s Lower East Side, creating art and music in the face of the HIV/AIDS crisis. Performances are April 13, 14, 20, 21 at 7:30 p.m. and April 22 at 4:00 p.m.
“Chicago” at Cohasset Dramatic Club, Cohasset, unfortunately features no students from SHS, but with tickets running $20 for adults and $18 for students and seniors, this is a must-see production right next door. This is a racy classic with catchy music, addressing crime and class in a jazzy exploration of tap dance and cabaret. Performances are March 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, 31 at 7:30 p.m. and March 18, 25 & April 1 at 2:00 p.m.
