The SHS Drama club is busily preparing their one act play, You Can’t Take it With You, for a performance at Bourne High School on Saturday, March 3rd, competing against seven other schools for one of 3 possible slots in the Massachusetts Theatre Guild (METG) semifinal round. The Guild hosts a variety of competitions throughout the year that showcase student talents in the performing arts. According to the Guild, in 2009 more than 3000 students participated from 115 schools in the High School festival.
But as Director Ms. Fanelli told us, the festival really is about “students coming together to celebrate theater”. The plays rely not only on the strength of their acting, but also the efforts of various members of the set, lights, and costume crew. Forty or so students, freshmen and seniors alike, will travel to Bourne with the Scituate Troupe. For many students, Drama is a form of art to which they have little exposure; the Festival serves as a celebration of something new and yet old.
Students interested in attending the show can travel to Bourne High School and buy a $10 ticket, which includes access to seven one-act plays. As for the coming spring, Ms. Fanelli tells us that students can expect a musical on May 3rd, 4th, and 5th. The Drama club will soon announce information regarding auditions, crew involvement, and, of course, the much anticipated name of the musical in question. Meanwhile, the cast and crew of You Can’t Take it With You are preparing to bring some serious competition to a festival full of theater-lovers.
