The 2012 presidential elections are rapidly approaching and various republicans have been coming out of the woodwork, to challenge president Obama next November. In late October, Herman Cain launched to the front of the Republican candidates claiming a rating of 28% According to public policy polling. This lead lasted only a couple of weeks until the Cain campaign was faced with numerous political blunders and accusations of sexual misconduct and affairs.
Herman Cain has been bashed back and forth and for some time actually remained alive placing third or second in national polls. This was quite a feat by the Cain campaign considering he has frequently stumbled on foreign policy such as his ‘brain freeze’ when questioned about Libya and his statement on a CNN interview that the “Government shouldn’t be trying to tell people [what to do] when it comes to social decisions.”
Cain since has become a joke for the media. This attention seems somewhat useless because even though some polls have placed him in third or second the last Quinnipiac poll taken in November placed him in with 14 percent of the vote. This small third place is likely to have dwindled considering it was taken before Herman Cain’s 13 year affair went public. It’s amazing that Herman Cain has survived as far as he did ,but it’s certainly not surprising considering the climate of the media over the last few election cycle’s.
The media has had a crush on these radical unelectable candidates since the rise of Sarah Palin. Herman Cain, just as Sarah Palin, has given the public a taste of his craziness, and they have become hooked on that junk like cat to catnip. The only reason Herman Cain received this attention and his momentary high ratings is because of the media’s desire for sensationalists.
Honestly, this scares me because although listening to ridiculous candidates like Herman Cain is worth a few laughs and makes the election cycle a little less dry; this constant to radical candidates is making the public tolerant of sensationalist candidates and more expecting of it. As these sensationalist get more attention from the media they become electable which is dangerous for this country. Even though Herman Cain is a entertaining talker and even a better gospel singer, if he became president I would be frightened for the future of our country.
