As Halloween draws closer and closer, many of the young children around the nation are beginning to anxiously await the arrival of Halloween. And why shouldn’t they? To them, it’s a great opportunity to dress up and of course, receive free candy from the houses around the neighborhood. There have always been the teenagers who refuse to give up the beloved holiday, and others who stop trick-or-treating as soon as they feel like it’s beneath them. The age limit for trick-or-treating is blurred, with no defined boundary, and this allows teenagers to take full advantage of the free candy being offered.
For many high school students, there is no defined limit for when to stop trick-or-treating, and many are asking themselves when they should abandon the tradition. Sophomore Casey McCormack said “I’d say 17. When you’re 16 and 15 you can still get away with it, but when you’re 17 you should probably do something better with your Halloween night.”
Although many are comfortable with the thought of teenagers trick-or-treating, there are some towns across the nation that would rather they stay out of neighborhoods on Halloween. According to the Boston Herald, towns like Belleville, Illinois have banned anyone over the age of 12 from trick-or-treating on Halloween. The mayor of the town, Mark Eckert, claims that the older kids were scaring some of the residents of the homes that were giving out candy, and they did not feel safe. Other towns, such as Meridian, Mississippi, Bishopville, South Carolina, and Boonsboro, Maryland have followed suit, and have banned trick-or-treating for teenagers.
In Scituate, this kind of law could cause an outrage among the teenagers. Senior Nicole Gallup said “That’s not okay. That’s stupid. That’s like telling someone they can’t go to Disneyland as an adult.”
Whether teenagers should stop trick-or-treating, when it comes down to it, is more of a personal preference than anything else. In Scituate, there are no bans, and no unwritten law that states an age limit. No matter how you spend your Halloween, the fun spirit of the holiday will always remain, regardless if you go trick-or-treating.
