iPods. iPhones. iPads. Macs. Macbooks: an empire of technological advancements. All of these are products of the vision of one man, the Former CEO of Apple Inc., Steve Jobs. The 56-year old Jobs resigned his position as Chief Executive Officer of Apple, Inc. Aug. 25, as a result of an “unspecified medical condition,” for which he had taken previous leaves of absences for. Jobs has officially been on medical leave from Apple since January.
With such successes as the iPod, iPad, and iPhone under the direction of Mr. Jobs, many are left to question: What’s next for Apple, and will the company ever be the same again without its brilliant product visionary?
Though he is technically stepping down from his position, Jobs’ legacy will still live on at Apple. Jobs created a new position, chairman of the board, which he will be filling with his hand picked successor; 50-year old Tim Cook will become Apple’s newest CEO.
Cook began working at Apple in 1998, and was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2007. While acting as COO, Jobs took medical leave in early 2009, leaving Cook in charge of the company. Under the direction of Cook, Apple’s stock rose 62 percent in the first half of 2009, and climbed another 8 percent since Jobs’ latest leave of absence, report Rachel Metz and Jordan Robertson of The Huffington Post.
And while Tim Cook assumes command of Apple after Mr. Jobs, the former CEO will not be completely stepping out of the picture. Jobs created a chairman of the board position at Apple, and will still attempt to provide “unique insights, creativity, and inspiration” for the company, suggesting that he is not completely walking out on his technological empire, according to Metz and Robertson.
As far as technology goes for Apple, the company does not easily give up information about new advancements to its products. With the most recent additions to the Apple arsenal coming in early June, with iCloud (a sorting network for Mac OSX) and the iPad 2, many are left to wonder how the change in leadership for Apple will affect its revolutionary product production.
According to the New York Times, Apple could be very close to producing the iPhone 5, which could contain a more powerful processor to keep up with the world’s rapidly expanding multimedia demands.
So even without Steve Jobs at the helm, yes, Apple will still be making mind-blowing products that constantly revolutionize the way we live and communicate.
Expect the iPhone 5 to have a sharper rear-facing camera, and an even better voice-control system, as a result of Apple’s purchasing of voice recognition company Siri in April 2010.
In addition, expect the new iPhone to be lighter and slimmer, as just about every product seems to get as Apple constantly revamps it.
Apple, Inc. is not completely lost without its fearless leader Mr. Jobs. With many different business deals and product revolutionizing processes in place, Apple should be able to function quite well in the coming months.
It goes without saying that Steve Jobs will be missed, but the future looks promising. The world is constantly adapting with the technology Apple produces, and will continue to change with it, as long as the creative, intuitive spirit of Steve Jobs remains alive within Apple, Inc.
