Upon entering Scituate High School on your first day so many questions and thoughts run through your mind. The most common being: I cannot wait to be a senior. Whether it is in a club, or sports, seniors seem to be in charge wherever they are involved. Senior year has a reputation for being a fun, exciting year full of new beginnings. It gives you a chance to explore different classes and show your strengths. It is the beginning of the end, and the start of forever.
Senior year may add a lot of stress due to the college application process however the amount of freedom given to students makes up for it and adds up to a fun year students will remember forever. Seniors are given certain privileges such as: the senior cafe, eating outside, coming in late or leaving early during study periods, etc. The freedom given to students allows for them to feel as if they are having more fun at school, as opposed to years past where it felt as though there were many restrictions. Along with the freedom, students are also given chances to take classes that spike their interest, rather then meet requirement. Classes such as, School to Career, Service Learning, and many other unique courses allow students to explore their interests in a more hands-on approach as opposed to the classic textbook education of the past. For seniors, schedules tend to open up more than in other years. With the sudden openings in schedules students are able to take electives they were never given the chance to take because of the multiple required classes they had had to take before. With the chance to explore other areas of education students get a glimpse into what their interests and passions are.
While senior year has its fair share of stress, the freedom and flexibility it gives you makes it worth all the hype it has earned over the course of the three years prior to the final year. When walking out of Scituate High School and walking on to the grounds of some campus somewhere else, one should be able to sit back and reflect upon senior year as one of the most fun years in the past 13 years of Scituate Public Schools. It may not be anything compared to the days with recess and snacks, however the freedom received makes up for it.
