Golf: Wednesday Sept. 7 was the start for the Scituate High School Golf Team with its first match versus Pembroke. The team is looking forward to the season, led by senior captains Mary Mulcahy and Jack O’Donahue. Last season, the team went 8-8 just qualifying for playoffs. After finishing 3rd in the Division 2 State Tournament, Coach Gerry Chisholm is light-hearted and optimistic: “As of right now, we’re still undefeated [because no matches have been played] and would like to keep it that way.”
Boys Soccer: Tuesday night at 6 p.m. the SHS boys soccer team kicked off their season. Varsity pulled away with a win 3-1 over the Norwell Clippers. Coach Forde said, “We might be small, but we’re slow.”
The boys finished last season 7-5-6, but hope to have a strong season this fall. Captains include seniors, Brendan O’Neil, Bobby Sincoski, and Harry Berton.
Girls Soccer: Tonight at 7 p.m. the girls soccer team will take on Cohasset as their season opener. With five new freshman on the team, Coach Ross Maki said, “it’s a really good group of freshmen, we’re looking forward to having them help our program at the varsity level and having a successful season.” Making it to the first round playoffs last year the girls lost to Duxbury, but are lead by strong senior captains Kate Lemire and Molly Peters this season. Peters commented saying “ I think we’ll have a really good season, we look strong throughout the field. Our offense will have a productive year.”
Football: Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Rockland High School the SHS boys football team coached by Herb Devine will start off the 2011 season. Winning the Fisher Division last year, the team has high hopes for another big season. According to senior Alex Way, despite the loss of a “huge and productive senior class” the team should do well again. Senior captain Lucas Barisano said, “The loss of strength from last year is replaced by speed and athleticism.” Other captains include seniors Matt King and Mitchell Drew.
Field Hockey: Hosting their annual Labor Day Tournament, the Scituate High Field Hockey team started off the season 2-0 last Monday, beating Marshfield and Dighton-Rehoboth. Because Head Coach Amanda Bird lost only four seniors last year, has twelve returning seniors this season and only one freshman on the squad, the team is looking firm. The captains, seniors Maggie Travers, Brenda Keys, Micala Moore and junior, Sarah Hoffman have high hopes for this season after making the MIAA Tournament for the first time in over a decade last year. “The players have high goals set for themselves and for the upcoming season,” Bird said.
Cross Country: The Cross Country season is “back from summer in the best shape” Coach Kathleen McCarthy has seen in a long time. With their first meet on Tuesday Sept. 13, only time will tell if standout seniors, Cassie Soucey, Sarah Adams, Madison Dell, Pete Noenickx, Brian Mingels, Chris Durkin and Danny Palmer will perform. After losing their top two girls last year McCarthy knows that the “seven through ten girls are ready to step up to the challenge.” She’s noticed the boys have been running all summer and is ready to see what they’ve got. The Cross Country program hopes to have success this fall.
