Mascara is considered essential in a makeup regimen. Applying mascara can enhance eyelashes by providing length, volume, and definition. However, it can have its drawbacks as well. Some people may experience smudging, clumping, and irritation, especially if they have sensitive eyes or use contact lenses. Additionally, removing mascara is a tedious process that can lead to lash breakage and damage.
Balancing the benefits and drawbacks of mascara can help people decide whether or not to include it in their beauty routine. While mascara primarily serves a cosmetic purpose by enhancing the appearance of lashes, it indirectly contributes to certain health benefits, too. Mascara can help protect the eyes from dust, debris, and sunlight by darkening your lashes. Long lashes can provide a natural barrier by reducing the likeness of particles reaching the eye.
SHS freshman Emmi Corkins said she prefers the Too Faced brand “BTS” non-waterproof mascara because of its lengthening benefits and easy application process. She commented, “I like the wand thick with long bristles and not thin with short bristles like Sky High, a Maybelline competitor.”
Enhancing the eyes with mascara can promote a sense of confidence and well-being, positively impacting mental health. SHS freshman Kelsey Vaccarino said that whenever she wears mascara, she feels more confident.
However, maintaining good eye hygiene, choosing quality mascara, and being cautious about potential irritation is crucial to ensuring the eyes’ overall health while using mascara. One common issue is the potential for eye irritation or allergic reactions. Corkins said she developed a stye, a painful red bump on the eyelid, from using her preferred mascara. She isn’t clear what caused this uncomfortable irritation, but some mascara may contain ingredients that can contribute to a reaction. Some mascara clumps and smudges throughout the day, which can be problematic and impact the desired aesthetic look.
If you wear mascara, it’s crucial to be mindful of the quality and shelf life of the product. Although it can enhance your lashes, boost your confidence, and accentuate your eyes, improper care or application can lead to potential problems. Choosing high-quality products, practicing good hygiene, and being aware of specific application techniques will ensure that mascara remains a positive addition to your get-ready routine.
