Today, March 26, is MLB Opening Day, one of the best days of the whole year, especially for baseball fans. Red Sox fans are looking forward to the 2026 season after a promising 2025 campaign, where they made the playoffs for the first time since 2021. The Red Sox will open up their season in Cincinnati this afternoon at 4:10 PM, taking on the Reds, with ace and 2025 AL Cy Young runner up Garrett Crochet on the mound. The Red Sox had an eventful offseason, making several moves, but also missing out on others. However, hopes are high, and the team looks like they have a chance to go further in the postseason come October.
Additions in the offseason included multiple starting pitchers. Early in the offseason, the Red Sox traded for former St. Louis Cardinal Sonny Gray, who is a well-established veteran with strikeout stuff and elite control. Another pitching addition came through a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who sent Johan Oviedo to the Red Sox for multiple prospects. Oviedo has not had substantial success in the big leagues, but has shown flashes of elite potential with a strong fastball and solid off-speed stuff. The final pitcher addition was the signing of former Philadelphia Phillie Ranger Suarez. The Sox signed Suarez to a 5 year, $130 million contract on January 21, marking their big free agent splash this winter. Suarez has lots of postseason experience and had strong seasons with the Phillies, earning an All-Star appearance in 2024.
With these moves, the Red Sox have built one of the best starting pitching rotations in all of Major League Baseball. Crochet, Gray, and Suarez are an elite top 3, with Brayan Bello and 2025 rookie standout Connelly Early rounding out the back to start the season. Oviedo will start in the bullpen, while #1 Red Sox prospect and lefty flamethrower Payton Tolle will wait in the wings in AAA for an opportunity.
To fill in a gaping hole at first base that was apparent over the 2025 season, the Red Sox made another trade with the Cardinals, acquiring three-time all-star and World Series champion Willson Contreras in exchange for multiple pitching prospects. Contreras will add much-needed power and stability to the Red Sox lineup that was missing for parts of last season.
Unfortunately, with these additions come some subtractions. The Red Sox’s big free agent splash from last offseason is no longer with the team. Third baseman Alex Bregman departed Boston for Chicago, signing with the Cubs on a 5 year $175 million contract. The Sox tried hard to get him to stay, offering just a bit less money, but Bregman opted for more money, and that’s just business. Other subtractions include platoon bat Rob Refsnyder, who signed with the Seattle Mariners, and key reliever Brennan Bernardino, who was traded to the Colorado Rockies.
However, the Red Sox countered the Bregman departure with a trade for a promising young player. On February 9, the Sox made a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, acquiring infielder Caleb Durbin, along with infielder Andruw Monasterio and a prospect. Durbin is the real highlight of this deal, coming off a top 3 finish in NL Rookie of the Year voting. He functions as the Bregman replacement and comes with a lot of team control and a promising future. Monasterio is a good platoon bat who hits well against left-handed pitching and serves as the Refsnyder replacement. The Sox also recently signed left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe to replace Bernardino. Overall, the Sox’s subtractions were countered with solid additions, and the team has improved since the end of last season.
The Red Sox had a solid offseason, and it should result in more success on the field. Everyone else from last year’s team is still returning. Outfielder Roman Anthony is expected to build on his strong rookie season and start to become the superstar player that he is destined to be. Veteran shortstop Trevor Story is expected to be a leader as well as an important bat in the lineup. After trade rumors, now designated hitter Jarren Duran is looking to once again use his speed to his advantage while adding power over the offseason. Wilyer Abreu will look to take a jump and go for his third straight Gold Glove in right field. Marcelo Mayer will look to have an impact at second base in his second season. And lastly, closer and ageless wonder Aroldis Chapman will keep throwing gas in the bullpen, and will likely be one of the best relievers in baseball once again.
This year, the Red Sox are being hyped up more than ever, and fans will look forward to seeing the team play at Fenway Park in the home opener on April 3, as well as the rest of the spring and summer. Come October, the Sox should still be playing baseball and have a solid chance at bringing home their 10th World Series title.
