The Scituate High School boys’ golf team is enjoying a fantastic 2025 season. They are currently 16-2. On Tuesday, October 14th, they advanced to the state tournament, which will be played on Monday, October 20th, at Foxboro Country Club.
Senior Captain Henry Gack is proud of the team’s performance, as well as the freshmen who have come up and played well. Freshman Joseph Mulvey is delighted with the squad’s hot performance and plans to build on that while going deeper into the postseason.
On September 11th, senior Matthew Monahan played a fantastic round against the Silver Lake Lakers at Halifax Country Club, with a score of -3 (33). Regarding his performance, Monahan stated, “I’ve been playing a lot better than my expectations, considering I’ve been on JV the last three years, but I’m doing pretty well.” Monahan hopes to continue playing good golf as he has goals of succeeding in the state tournament.
Out of the Sailors’ 16 wins, three of them broke the previous school records for the fewest strokes. The team is both shocked and thrilled about this achievement, but especially their captain, Gack, who commented, “I’ve never seen anything like this in my four years on this team–this is just really something incredible.” Seniors in the Sailors’ starting lineup are outnumbered by a mix of juniors, sophomores, and freshmen, making this an even more incredible feat and demonstrating that the future of the Scituate golf program is very bright.
Consistency and playing well have been key to the Sailors’ success, with Monahan stating, “Golf is a personal sport, but at the same time it’s a team sport, so both facets of the singular and the team come together.” Agreeing with Monahan, Mulvey says, “Consistency and putting the work in have led to positive results so far.”
A common theme for the team is working and playing golf outside of just matches to stay consistent and lead to positive results. This work is put in at the range and the putting green, as well as rounds outside of team practices on weekends. All of this has been a key factor in positive scores.
Monahan has a formidable goal for the rest of the season: “I plan on breaking the school’s lowest round record–I mean, I have already shot three under par, so I have not hit my ceiling yet.” Mulvey and Gack both have aspirations to win the state tournament.
Monahan exclaimed, “Roll Sailors!”
