SHS junior David Murphy officially claimed the champion title at this year’s sectional championships, but to many, this comes as no surprise.

Murphy has been winning since middle school. In fact, when he was in 8th grade, he participated in a JV high school match and beat his older opponent. Murphy’s winning streak started early: Gates Middle School social studies teacher Brian Robinson, his middle school wrestling coach, noted he had a “winning record in both 7th and 8th grade.”

Nevertheless, looking back on his middle school years, Murphy claims it wasn’t easy: “It was a lot of learning. I had never wrestled before–nobody there had really wrestled before. Mr. Robb had to teach us from scratch.” Naturally, this was to be expected of someone new to the sport, but that still leaves an unanswered question: How did Murphy achieve so much so quickly?

In the end, Murphy’s trajectory of accomplishment boils down to his personality and his drive for success. Coach Robinson said it best: “He possesses a strong work ethic and a dedication to constantly improving his endurance and skills, which are important qualities for success both as a wrestler and as a person. Additionally, his kindness and positive attitude have helped him build strong relationships with his coaches, teammates, and others in the local wrestling community, which has contributed to his success.”

Murphy’s record reveals a laundry list of achievements. According to Robinson, Murphy “just missed placing at D3 States” during his sophomore year. This year, in addition to being selected team captain, he won over 30 matches, placed 5th at the Marshfield Holiday Tournament, 1st at the Cohasset Tournament (where he was voted Outstanding Wrestler by the coaches in attendance), 1st at Sectionals, and 2nd at D3 States. Murphy was also distinguished as a Patriot League All-Star.

Clearly, Murphy has been a force in the wrestling community ever since he was in middle school, and from what is inferred, he will continue to make a name for himself during his final high school season. With a drive for success and a strong willingness to put in the effort, there is no telling what next season holds.
