Not only did Scituate football conquer the State Championship at Gillette Stadium, but the program saw many individuals succeed as well. Senior Captain Daniel May won the Patriot MVP Award. Recipients of this award are selected cooperatively by six coaches from the Patriot League, excluding Scituate Head Coach, Herb Devine.

Senior Captain Daniel May is serious on the field. At Gillette, May was confident that Scituate would win, but he was not expecting to get the MVP Award due to the fact that his best performances were during games outside of the league. The MVPs are selected from within the Patriot League, which consists of six teams. However, regardless of how proud May was to win MVP, he was more excited about his team winning state because that is “every kid’s dream.”

During the most dreadful part of the season — waking up at 8 a.m. on summer mornings for workouts — May would find himself and his teammates asking themselves, “Why are we doing this?” The thought of being State Champions, even months prior to the date, was the fuel that kept them going. That, May recaps, is “why we’re so good” — having a common goal and unwavering motivation.

In addition to state, May is motivated to succeed to make “Scimass” proud. His favorite part of the season was the Dennis-Yarmouth playoff game on Scituate’s turf when the rowdy fan base stormed the field to congratulate the winners of their underdog team. Just “stuff I’ll always remember,” May commented.

A humble player, May can only report that he deserves to be MVP due to his Captainship. On the other hand, May’s coach, Herb Devine, argues that “Danny is the most exciting player to watch.” May, who is focused on the success of the team as the whole, still loves his role as captain. Being able to talk in front of the team and have everyone listen. Before the Gillette game, May kept his words to his team simple: “We have a great opportunity to be great, let’s just do it.”
