Girls Basketball Made Strides On the Court

Girls basketball continues to build a strong program

The Scituate Girls Basketball Team had an exceptional year, culminating in a playoff win. They made huge strides by winning their first preliminary tournament game in four years. They had a couple rough games, but they consistently played tough until the end. The score didn’t always reflect the hard work and effort the girls put in each quarter of every game.

According to senior captain Emily Grant, the team’s game against Whitman Hanson really “turned their season around.”  The team finished their season 11-10, just making it into the tournament.  Skylar Rojik, a junior player on the varsity team, stated that the game against Pembroke was the highlight of her season.  “It was one of the first tournament games in four or five years that we’d won,” she said.  When asked what she is looking forward to next year, Rojik stated that since the team will be made of mostly underclassmen it will mean a bright future for Scituate High School.

Rojik makes a fair point. This year, approximately half of the team was comprised of returning varsity players, while the other half were new to the team. Only four players will be graduating, allowing for next season to be full of experienced varsity level players.

Since hiring a completely new coaching staff two years ago, the entire girls basketball program has been built up. Junior Molly Bonner, who played on the JV team earlier in the season, said, “The environment of the team was so positive, and we had a lot of fun.” Scituate girl’s basketball had a great season and the girls are optimistic for making a comeback to the tournament next year.
