As the crowd filters in, the atmosphere of Scituate High School’s football field changes from an open stadium to an environment filled with energy and support. Among parents, siblings, and friends, one can find the Scituate High School’s pep band preparing to bring energy to the game.
Led by Mrs. Tucker, the pep band definitely adds to the energy level of the game. Seated in the top right corner of the bleachers, band members often get the audience on its feet while clad in blue. Playing multiple songs throughout the night, the band keeps the spectators excited no matter what the score is, even to the point that the fans sing along to some tunes, like “YMCA” and “The Hey Song.”
Members of the pep band are eagerly awaiting the first home game this Friday. Sophomore Emma Dwyer, who plays the clarinet, is looking forward to the game as she said “It’s always really fun. You get to hang out with your friends!” Junior Skye Fenton, a baritone player, said “I’m excited to hang out with all of my friends and have a swell time.” Andrew Mingles, a sophomore percussionist said that pep band is a fun time, and that “The best part is getting to buy food and eat there.”
Extensive practice is necessary to prepare for a night of fun yet demanding playing, and members of the band are required to meet early in the band room, where they can perfect their set list before hitting the bleachers. While members agree that playing pep band music at a
football game requires a lot of hard work, it certainly pays off when the crowd sings along and enjoys the music. As their debut performance of the year, the pep band is sure to liven the spirits of spectators at the upcoming football game.
