Halftime is the one time of the game when the most hardcore football fans’ focus is shifted away from the action. They may choose to take a walk. or decide to take that well deserved bathroom break, knowing that the opportunity may not resurface. But perhaps the most popular halftime pastime is making the pilgrimage towards the concession stand.
The concession booth is a hungry football fan’s best friend. It is the epicenter of food at the football games, carrying both healthy and non-healthy snack’s alike. However, this is no easy task to manage. Luckily, Scituate High School is fortunate enough to have SHORE, Scituate High Opportunities and Resources for Education, running the stand.
President of SHORE, Lisa Rafferty, describes the process as, well, a process indeed. First, SHORE must receive a permit from the town of Scituate, and then, they need to reserve the
time to operate the concession stand. Finally, they must take a trip to BJ’s Wholesale Club to gain the materials for each upcoming game. These include the regular “crowd pleasers”, such as nachos and hot dogs, but there is also a balance of healthy snacks that are being sold, like apples.
Then, they have to determine who will sell the concessions. According to Rafferty, parents who are involved in SHORE volunteer to sell concessions. There is also a Green Team, which consists of students who walk around, collecting bottles and recyclables from the bleachers.
While the process can be demanding, it is certainly worth it. The profit of the games is roughly two-thousand dollars. The money raised goes towards certain grants towards the arts, athletics, and academics, such as the 3-D printer and the new rock wall. Be sure to look out for the future SHORE events such as the Polar Express in December and the SHORE Run later this month.
When asked about the upcoming season, Rafferty states that she is certainly excited. She hopes that everyone who attends the game will “stop by and buy some pizza”. And who doesn’t love that?
