Why I Don’t Support Donald Trump

Student Speaks Out about Presidential Race

Drew Higgins, SHS Junior

I supported Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary due to his friendly policy regarding college tuition and his support for America’s students. Hillary Clinton became the first female presidential nominee, and while it may have been historic, I was underwhelmed when our choices for president were Clinton and Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.

Going into the weekend of the second presidential debate, I was impartial to each candidate. Then the tape of Trump’s comments to Billy Bush was released. While on a tour bus with Bush, Trump talked about how he has sexually assaulted women, especially Miss America beauty pageant contestants. It was then that I knew that this man couldn’t become president, or it would mean the end of the United States. How could anyone, especially of the female gender, support him after that? How could a man, who can’t finish a sentence, is overtly racist, discriminates based on religion, and shows no respect to women, be a serious candidate for president of the United States, of the free world?

Ask a Donald Trump supporter how they could stick with him through all this, and they will give you a variety of weak answers. The one I’ve heard the most, and the one Trump has said himself, is that Bill Clinton did much worse, and Trump should be excused. This is a shallow way to justify sexually assaulting women for two reasons. One is that Bill Clinton is not running for president. Hillary is, so this is no way to make Hillary seem more like the worse candidate. The next is that while what Bill Clinton did is no doubt unforgivable for a president, that doesn’t mean that it’s okay for it to be done again! The goal is to learn from our past mistakes and not let another man like that into an office where he could embarrass our nation more.

The next way that Trump and his supporters have tried to justify his actions is by calling the whole ordeal lies, and claiming that the election is rigged. Quite honestly, I think this defense of his actions is despicable, and it shows how Trump’s campaign is in a spiral. Trump and his supporters can’t prove the claims of his sexual assaults wrong, so they just call the victims of Trump liars and try to bury the story.

Trump attempted to apologize on television, and for the first time in the entire election, what he said sounded entirely scripted and absolutely fake. He has always disregarded what his advisors tell him to say and blurts out whatever he thinks, but his apology gets scripted? The fact that he commits sexual assault, and then he can’t even give a real apology to the people who he expects to vote for him come election day, is blasphemous.

It’s not that I necessarily agree with Hillary Clinton’s policies, or that I’m against Republicans. The alternative is just too scary, so I urge everyone to vote for Hillary Clinton.
