South Shore Digital Wellness, a new nonprofit organization, aims to make a positive impact in the community by offering activities and educational programming for families. Their first public event, a panel discussion centered on Jonathan Haidt’s book, The Anxious Generation, will take place at the Scituate Town Library on Tuesday, May 6th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
After attending a panel discussion about Haidt’s book in Cohasset last fall, the group decided to sponsor a similar event in the spring featuring Scituate educators, students, and mental health professionals. Moderated by Lynne Reeves Griffin, an internationally recognized family counselor and best-selling author, the panel will focus on topics related to technology, social media, and mental health. The discussion will help local community members understand how the digital landscape is changing and how it is affecting children’s mental health.
South Shore Digital Wellness plans to sponsor future events that will provide community members with valuable resources–including a network of parents, a safe space for meaningful discussion, and an opportunity to ask questions.
In addition to raising awareness, South Shore Digital Wellness hopes to foster community connections through book groups, play clubs, nature walks, and other family-friendly activities.
The organization is offering community service hours to SHS students who would like to assist with any of their activities or educational programs. SHS students who attend the May 6th event can earn community service; they are encouraged to share their experiences to provide more knowledge to younger families.
