The SHS Shed

South Shore Technical High School (SST) is a regional vocational high school located in Hanover, MA, that welcomes students from Abington, Cohasset, Hanover, Hanson, Norwell, Rockland, Scituate, and Whitman. At SST, students study core academic subjects as well as vocational trades. The vocational programs available to students include Allied Health, Automotive, Carpentry, Computer Info Tech, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Electrical, Engineering, Graphic Communications, Horticulture, HVAC-R, and Metal Fab.

For the past several months, students from SST have been constructing a shed in the SHS courtyard outside the Performing Arts Center. Day to day, students pass through the courtyard watching the construction progress, but many do not know the reason behind its building. SHS assistant principal Karen Hughes answered this frequently asked question, stating, “The shed will be used for storing music and/or drama equipment.”

Historically, SHS and SST have enjoyed a strong relationship. In recent years, editors of The Scituation and Fathom have turned to the SST print shop for help with their annual print publications. Hughes elaborated on how hiring SST students to build the SHS shed is “great because it’s a chance to give back to VOTECH students.”

SST juniors Michael Crowley and Dylan Boulch are members of the carpentry shop. They spend one week in the field working on carpentry and one week in class working on academics. During shop class, SST students learn the fundamentals of their vocation, such as framing “the members of the wall” and “how high structures must be.”

SST provides students with a different approach to learning. Crowley said he went to SST to “learn a trade,” and Crowley stated that SST’s “hands-on learning” is perfect for a student who “can’t focus in a traditional classroom.”

SHS is grateful for the SST students’ dedicated work and appreciates their time and effort and looks forward to seeing the final product!
