Stay-in-Place Ordered on January 10th

On Thursday, January 10th, at approximately 2:35 p.m., SHS principal Robert Wargo issued a “stay-in-place,” which was announced over the loudspeaker. Although students would normally be released at 2:41 p.m., all students and faculty were instructed to remain in their rooms until they were notified otherwise.

The grounds for the January 20th stay-in-place order stemmed from a concerning, rubbery odor coming from the chemistry corridor. Hot plates were being used in experimentation during this particular class period, but the sand, salt, and water involved in the experiment should not have produced such a scent.

In a precautionary measure, Principal Wargo alerted the Scituate Fire Department. Fire officials responded immediately and deemed the air quality safe within the building. The stay-in-place was lifted at 2:45 p.m.
