Newly added to the SHS stoop, the high tops are on trial for the month of December. After working with members of the senior class about their desire to reinstate high tops at the stoop, Principal Robert Wargo has decided to run a trial until the end of December to see if seniors can “adhere to the expectations or not.” This area is to be used as a quiet study and is not available as a lunch location.

As a new spot available—strictly for senior students—online E-Passes are now accessible through Aspen. Twelve passes are available each block, excluding lunch block.

After finding students in action at the high top tables at the stoop, it was discovered to be a quiet place for students to get their work done. Considered a “good senior hangout,” according to senior Charlotte Falvey, this space is already seen as a positive location to “collaborate more with people,” said senior Abby Carnes. Being another available spot for seniors at SHS, there is noticeably less crowding in the senior cafe. Senior Elizabeth Stevenson thinks adding high tops to the stoop creates “more room for study kids,” which helps a previous overcrowding issue in the senior cafe.

After utilizing the space during a study block, senior Kevin Farwell states he “got plenty of work done” at the high tops. Another senior, Peter Sunnerberg, thinks “it’s never too loud over there.”

After “issues last year,” the senior class felt it was unfair to be blamed for the behavior of past years’ seniors. Members of the senior class were looking for an additional space to be productive, and Wargo agreed to give the Class of 2019 a chance. Because he described the stoop area as a place where noise can easily echo, it is being “treated like a quiet study area,” explained Wargo. Making an effort to examine the location during each block every day, Wargo believes the pilot is “going very well so far,” describing how students are pleasing his expectations.

After students and staff return from winter break, a decision will be made about whether or not the high tops will remain at the stoop.
