New Clubs at SHS

Students at Scituate High School are making their marks and starting up new clubs of all different genres. From a new co-ed sports club being started in the spring to young politicians making their mark, students are creating new clubs to benefit their own interests.

One new club being started Spring of 2017 is for students who want to play a sport but who do not want the pressures of being on a varsity team. Junior, Maria Trifiro plays on the Varsity Volleyball team for Scituate and wanted to find a way to play her sport throughout the year. She wanted to start this club for students who did not have the chance to play volleyball in the fall, due to other commitments. She is looking to bring all grades together to build teamwork and make it possible for students of all interests to come and play a sport, without the stress of a varsity level. This club will consist of co-ed pick-up volleyball games every Tuesday and Thursday, starting April 10th in the gym. There will be numerous tournaments and rewards throughout the season. For more information, email Maria Trifiro at [email protected].

Another new club at Scituate High School is the Feminism club, started by senior Genna Goodman. Goodman started this club in order to raise awareness about the cause. Goodman explained how “feminism is the fight for women being equal to men in all aspects of life.” This club works towards making a difference to not just women but all people. The club believes, “All people should be equal no matter what race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion.” During club meetings, the club discusses issues around the school that they can work to change and spread awareness. This year they have planned numerous activities: for example, they are going to Boston to interview a woman about her experiences and updating the famous feminism video. For more information about this club, email Genna Goodman at [email protected].

The Young Democrats of Massachusetts: Scituate Chapter is a new club at Scituate High School focused on discussing progressive issues and talking about politics and how they affect us in life. Junior Peyton Brown has always been interested in politics and wanted to be involved. Due to the negative campaign, Brown wanted to open the eyes of students to what was really going on in the campaign. Brown plans to make the club “a vehicle for positivity and inclusiveness.” He wants to make a change to make Scituate High School a better place. In the future, the club plans to produce a positivity campaign and contact local politicians to help them get the word out about what they do. The club hopes to get involved with the community and part-take in a clean ocean initiative. Brown expressed how they are always looking for more members because “in this day and age it is our responsibility as young people to push for what is right and what we believe in.” For more information contact Peyton Brown at [email protected]. Junior Olivia Clark started a foundation called SAIL4S or Students About Improving Lives For Students. The purpose of this foundation is to fundraise for clothes and scholarships for inner city kids who can not afford them. Clark has been keeping up with this foundation for two years and this year Mr. Wargo asked Clark to get students involved at Scituate High School with the cause. She now has more members to help with the main goal of helping other students in need. The club is made up of a board of Clark’s friends and they are all working to make a difference. This past year the SAIL4S club got 1100 pieces of clothing, including winter coats, gloves, pants and shirts to donate for the Rafael Hernandez School and the English High School in Boston. The club is always looking for more members to help with fundraising and the coat drives. For more information contact Olivia Clark at [email protected].
