You’ve probably seen Will Yonce around SHS — after graduating in 2021, he’s returned as one of the newest substitute teachers.
A graduate of Boston University, where he majored in mathematics and computer science, Yonce described his high school years as difficult due to the Covid pandemic. Yonce stated, “In 2020, I dealt with the Covid year, and that kinda screwed a lot of things up, and so my senior year was a little funky in the sense that we were dealing with hybrid stuff.” Nevertheless, Yonce noted that Scituate offered many opportunities for students to stay prepared for college.
While he was a student at SHS, Yonce played on the boys’ varsity soccer team and enjoyed math classes. SHS math teacher Jamie Forde was one of his favorite teachers because he taught math and coached the boys’ soccer team. Forde said he is a big fan of Yonce, describing him as “responsible, quiet, and always engaged.”
When asked about his experience as a substitute teacher, Yonce said it “feels rewarding” to do something that interests him. Since he’s considering a professional career as a math teacher, he is using this opportunity to learn and prepare. While Yonce enjoys teaching in his hometown, he also sees the benefit of gaining a different perspective. Yonce explained: “I really like it here, and I could eventually see myself coming back here, but in the near future, I would say I’d want to move around a little bit more.” However, Yonce emphasized that he feels very fortunate for this opportunity and is excited to gain more teaching experience.
In addition to Yonce’s dedication, SHS Principal Marc Loranger said he has been very flexible, coming in almost every day and stepping in when teachers need a substitute to cover their classes. Loranger noted, “He comes in, picks up jobs, and you see how he’s doing a really good job.” As Yonce continues in his new role, it is clear that his work ethic and passion are making a meaningful impact here at Scituate High School.
