SHS freshman Isabella (Bella) Trevaskis made history in the local swim community. As an underclassman, she shattered the long-standing SHS 100-yard freestyle record, setting a new benchmark of 54.59 seconds. The previous record, 56.1 seconds, stood for 12 years. Trevaskis’s results at States, held at Boston University on February 15th, stunned both her SHS teammates and coaches. According to SHS business teacher and varsity swim coach Eric Fagerlund, “It reflects the commitment that she’s put in. She’s all in all the time.”
Trevaskis’s incredible performance didn’t stop with just one victory. She also competed in the 100-yard backstroke, setting a new record of 1:02.16. In addition, she competed in the 200-yard medley relay and anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay. For a freshman to be involved in so many key events speaks volumes about her versatility and potential.
Breaking the school record showcases Trevaskis’s years of determination, dedication, and love for the sport. First starting her training in San Francisco, California, when she was in 6th grade, Trevaskis joined the Scituate Sailfish Swim Team when her family relocated to Scituate prior to her 7th grade year. In addition to swimming for SHS, Trevaskis swims for Kingfish Swim Team, a club team based in Kingston, MA.
Since joining the SHS varsity swim team, Trevaskis has been focused on her sport and hopes to continue beyond graduation: “I am definitely looking to swim in college,” she shared, reflecting on her journey and the opportunities ahead. Her goal has always been to push herself, and her performance in the 100-yard freestyle event, considered one of the most competitive events, shows that hard work pays off.
This year, Trevaskis, SHS senior Ryan Johnson Rees, and SHS junior Peter Nelson were all named Patriot Ledger All-Scholastics.
During the high school team’s end-of-season banquet, Trevaskis and Nelson were honored by the coaches as “Most Outstanding Swimmers.” Additionally, Trevaskis, Nelson, Johnson Rees, sophomore Rose Lindblom, junior McKenzie Gilmore, and seniors Deryn Collins and Cruz Tompkins were recognized as Patriot League All-Stars.
With a natural gift for swimming and unwavering determination, it’s clear Trevaskis is just getting started. If this season’s record-breaking momentum is any indication, her high school career is set to be one for the books. Fagerlund noted, “She’s an individual but part of a team, and she knows how to tow that line. This is the first step of what’s going to be a wildly successful career.”
