The holiday season is a time for giving—no matter if you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or nothing. Such religious and cultural celebrations emphasize spending time with those you love and giving back to the community. So, listed below are local opportunities to help others (and in turn, increase your own holiday cheer)!

  • Scituate Community Christmas Toy Drive

Organized by SHS senior Annika McCanne, this toy drive aims to connect the school with the Scituate community. Students have the opportunity to donate toys—with wish list recommendations—as gifts to people in Scituate and surrounding areas. As a yummy incentive, the homeroom with the most toy donations wins a holiday themed pizza party!

When: December 1st-16th

Where: Labeled box outside the main office

  • Scituate Food Pantry

The food pantry accepts donations year-round—people need food regardless of the season. Non-perishable items, like canned fish, cereal, or granola bars, are always needed.

When: year-long

Where: Scituate Food Pantry, Scituate Fire Station, Scituate Public Library, Shaw’s, Village Market

Times:

Tuesdays: 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Wednesdays: 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM

Thursdays: 2:30 PM to 5:15 PM

See more information here: https://www.scituatefoodpantry.org/what-we-need.html

  • Scituate American Legion’s “Wreaths Across America”

On December 17th, Scituate residents and friends are invited to honor Scituate veterans by attending the “Wreaths Across America” ceremony. Directly following, a more localized ceremony called “Winter Wreaths for Heroes” invites attendees to place holiday wreaths on veterans’ graves.

To help defray the costs to the Post, contributions can be mailed to Scituate American Legion Post 144 P.O. Box 577 Scituate, MA. 02066

When: Noon on Saturday, December 17th

Where: Lawson Park Soldiers and Sailors monument (for “Wreaths Across America”)

Cudworth Veterans Cemetery (for “Winter Wreaths for Heroes”)

  • Christmas Trees at the FreeMason

The Scituate Freemasons are selling Christmas trees benefitting local charities and scholarships. If you’re still in need of some Christmas cheer, stop by 344 Country Way for a great selection of 5-6’ and 8-10’ trees.

When: as supplies last (anytime before December 24th)

Where: 344 Country Way, Scituate, MA

Times: Monday – Friday 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM

Saturday/Sunday 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
