One of the most coveted privileges of becoming a upperclassman at Scituate High School is to receive your parking pass. Every year there is a rush to pay your fees first, so you are ensured a good spot in either the Senior or Junior lots. But this year the rules have changed.
Traditionally students who can drive at Scituate High School pay a parking pass fee, and then receive a parking pass with a number on it. These passes are traditionally hung from students mirrors, and they are instructed to park in the number spot that is marked on their passes. But, everyone at Scituate High School knows that the process doesn’t always go this smoothly. Many times students are greeted in the morning to the wonderful news that someone has stolen their parking spot. Madness then ensues in the parking lot, and causes an influx of complaints to the front office. To reduce these issues Scituate High School has decided to take a new approach on the parking situation. Ms. Ward from the front office said “I think its going to work better, because students can’t take other students spots. Its just less confusion”
This year the parking passes are now stickers. Instead of assigned spots, its now first come first serve. Seniors are given blue stickers, while juniors were given white ones. These stickers are to be placed on the black left window of the cars. Each sticker color corresponds with each lot. The pros to this system is that it encourages student to come to school earlier, and allows all seniors the opportunity to park in the senior lot, instead of the junior lot if that’s where their number had been assigned.
Our senior parking lot is positioned with great access to the cafeteria, making easy access for students to come to school in the morning. Scituate High School also has the junior parking lot, which is the less sought out spaces for students vehicles. If there is a “white sticker car” in the senior parking lot they risk being penalized. In terms of their punishment, Ms. Ward from the front office said “We would call them down and talk to them, and have them move it.” This system also has some downsides, which we are hearing from the students.
Senior Katherine Powers said “ I think that its going to cause more drama than the old way used to. There will be more accidents because of the rush into school and the office can deal with a little bit of drama.”
“I think the stickers are
O not a good idea, because they go on the inside of windows so they can’t be seen with tinted windows,” senior Thomas Burkhardt said.
It seems as though students are not in favor of the new system, but we will have to wait and see how the parking mayhem works out.
