It’s obvious that Animal Planet is known for the weirdest and most addicting specials on nature and mutant life. Just a mere few weeks ago, it released the jaw dropping mockumentary “Mermaids: The New Evidence” that got over three million views worldwide. Do you believe in the mythical creatures?
For years, international scientists and marine biologists have dedicated their life to catching the human fish. Two years ago, Animal Planet leaked the “Mermaids: The Body Found.” The world buzzed with chatter, as the proof was completely surreal. There’s nothing as appealing as a legend that can be believed.
Remy Lovell, a current junior, confidently said, “I can find no evidence contradicting the existence of mermaids.” He’s right, there is currently no evidence proving their existence nor disproving it.
During this new phenomenon, all of the evidence completely shocked viewers. Cell phone footage was shown of two young Washington boys who found a life-size fish-like body washed up next to a dead whale ashore. It was hard to remember that the footage wasn’t legitimate, hence why the film was so successful.
One of the most popular scenes featured the Navy, who were blamed for secretly removing the body the boys found and hiding it from the general public. Animal Planet did a fabulous job of convincing the public that the government was caught in another lie, and this time it was one the people took seriously.
Later, a Baltic Sea fisherman was featured, who had captured a long body swimming away after ripping his net on camera. The surprised man told the world that mermaids must have used their little spears to stab his fish.
“The odd spears that the fisherman had found dug into his fish ultimately convinced me,” said sophomore Terrence Flaherty.
The world is not taking this issue as a boring joke. Thousands of YouTube videos have been made of all different conspiracies regarding the fantasy creature. What’s so interesting is how believable this myth is and how hard it is to prove that they don’t exist. Animal Planet stated that humans can hold their breath for up to twenty minutes and some jobs in Southeast Asia require underwater hunting on the ocean floor. What about our flexible spine? Are we the only land animals with it for a reason? The questions we ponder on could go on forever.
For centuries, the mermaid has been featured in multiple cultures. Is that a coincidence? The Odyssey portrayed the mythical creatures dangerous sirens who captured humans’ attention with their addicting beauty and singing.Mermaids are also a symbol of childhood of young girls. The mermaid Barbie is one of the most popular toys and have been around for years.
The fake documentary proved nothing but the immense, long lasting interest of mermaids. People can’t seem to get enough of them, even if it is just a hoax!
“Well, I believe in them because they just contribute to today’s society,” said freshman Belle Otto. Scituate High School was buzzing with mermaid talk on the Monday morning the day following the premiere.
Once again, Animal Planet succeeds in blowing minds. For weeks, mermaids will be an addictive topic of everyday conversation despite whether you believe or not. For now, there are thousands of miles of unexplored ocean floor. Nobody knows what’s roaming around down there for sure. Let’s just hope they don’t wash ashore Minot Beach any time soon!
