In Scituate, it is a competition when it comes to which beach is the best. With eight to choose from, many different opinions form. This then leads to endless conversation between you and your friends, but no one is really an expert. Most commonly, the best beaches are within short distances of other summer activities, where you can spend the day. By the end of these controversies, usually the same two beaches come out being either the best or the worst. However, there has been two major factors impacting new decisions, and their names are Sandy and Nemo.
These two storms certainly kept us all company during the frigid nights, many without heat and or electricity. Besides taking away some basic necessities during the fall and winter, they also proceeded to destroy homes, and puncture the sea walls, causing decay, which will only have a domino effect.
Some may be asking themselves which beaches were impacted the most? Well, all of them were affected in some way, but at Sand Hills, the wall has cracks in many places, especially near the main entrance. Masses have fallen out of the sides, which is never a good sign. “Sand Hills seems as if it is crumbling which is probably from the storm” said junior Brooke Bartoloni, “it definitely hit worse there.” This is surely affecting everyone’s decisions about where they will be laying out their towels and throwing a Frisbee this summer.
According to the online poll taken by SHS students, Minot and Peggotty are tied for the best beaches. Junior Lauren Williams said, “My favorite is Minot because there is a lot more beach available”. This is true for many because although there might not be as many attractions around this area, swimming out to the giant rock, walking along the sea wall and bathing in the sun with a picnic may be all you need for a relaxing day during the summer.
Besides Minot, Peggotty is another summer hot spot. In walking distance to delectable ice cream shops and a harbor bountiful with restaurants and stores, it only intrigues the Scituate community. Also, something to remember for you drivers out there, you can get away with not having a beach sticker. That is if you get there early enough to steal one of the selective spots.
Summer 2013 is going to be one of the shortest yet. We only have two short months so you better choose your beaches wisely. Don’t waste a day surrounded by seaweed and flies.
