Pinterest seems to be all the craze these days. Whether it be pinning the latest food trends, planning an event, or even the newest DIY ideas. In my own experiences I have tried DIY’s that have proven to be successful, for instance I have discovered my absolute favorite five minute chocolate cake via this new website. Pinterest is an online website where you make an account and create “pin boards”. These pin boards are an accumulation of “pins” that range from furry friends to funny quotes. Once you have created pin boards you can then “pin” to your boards, by scrolling through your news feed of pin ideas.
Recently there has been numerous amounts of DIY’s ranging from types of fashion to the latest holiday design tips. When logging onto Pinterest for the first time you are immediately greeted by an array of DIY ideas that envelop you with unbelievable appeal. To many, when you look on Pinterest, you are immediately drawn into the food, or the fancy arts and crafts that plaster the web page. Junior, Jenna Baker said “Yes, I made cookies and they were wicked good.” when asked about what she had done for DIY’s. A lot of people tend to try these ideas that can either be a success or a bust. We have conducted a survey here at SHS to evaluate how and who uses Pinterest, and whether or not it is useful. We also found out whether or not these DIY’s work.
Of the thirty two students who said they use or have used Pinterest, nineteen people said that their DIY projects have turned out well, and eighteen of them said they would in fact try it again. Some of these included baking, hair as well as fashion ideas and even fitness regimens. Of the thirty two students, eight of them said they were met with little success, but seven of them would give it another go. Finally, the remaining six students said that they did use Pinterest, but have never tried a DIY, although three of them still thought the site was useful.
It’s hard to tell if Pinterest is just another social media fad of our generation, but as shown by our survey 34% of the surveyed students use Pinterest, and of those, 56% of them have been met with success. As junior Jenna Baker says “I’m like addicted.” Pinterest could be a great resource for fun and trendy and ideas to do, and has been a catalyst to spark the DIY movement.
