Over 15 million viewers witnessed music history during the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on February 1st when the album Debi Tirar Mas Fotos became the first Spanish-language album to win Album of the Year. One week later, on February 8th, the artist, popular Puerto Rican rapper, singer, and record producer Benito Antonio Martínez Oscasio, also known as Bad Bunny, will make headlines again as this year’s 2026 Super Bowl halftime performer.
Bad Bunny is considered one of the best Latin rappers of all time and continues to use his platform to advocate for community, challenge homophobia, and promote gender fluidity. Bad Bunny was chosen for his popularity, but many people have mixed opinions about his performance because he sings in Spanish.
How does SHS feel about Bad Bunny performing at this year’s Super Bowl?
SHS Spanish teacher Señora Christina Murray said she enjoys listening to Bad Bunny, commenting that his music is very moving: “I feel very good about it. I’m excited because it’s about time that he is there. He’s been popular and on the Top 10 for a long time, for many, many years.”
Bad Bunny may be a favorite artist among Spanish speakers, but he isn’t as well-known in the U.S. because many Americans don’t listen to Spanish music. In addition, many people don’t know what his songs are saying or the messages he conveys. Señora Murray said, “I like what Bad Bunny stands for as well. A lot of his songs are socially conscious, and I don’t know if most people know that. And he grew up a choir boy, and so he has kind of an interesting history.”
SHS senior Kathryn McLean could only name one Bad Bunny song, but she thinks it is great that he is performing at the Super Bowl. In her opinion, people might have mixed feelings about his performance, but “he has a big enough fan base that it shouldn’t matter.”
Although you might not think you know any of Bad Bunny’s songs, he appears on many popular songs with famous singers, and his music is also played repeatedly on the radio. After interviewing both Señora Murray and McLean, Señora Murray said she knew the song “MIA,” which is very popular. Additionally, McLean knew the song “I Like It,” by Cardi B, featuring Bad Bunny.
Bad Bunny’s performance at this year’s Super Bowl is likely to influence his public perception, and although there will be mixed opinions, over 127 million people are expected to watch.
