College, college, college. It is safe to say college is on the mind of every high school senior right now as deadlines are approaching. Seniors all around the world are finishing their Common Application, perfecting their college essay, and cleaning up their social media accounts. It is known that some college admission officers often check out applicant’s profiles on Twitter, Facebook, and other sites.
“Just use common sense. Don’t be stupid. If you don’t want your family to see it, you don’t want a college to see it. And your family is going see it,” said senior Courtney Song
In a recent article from the Today Show, a study from Kaplan Test Prep showed, “30% of admissions officers say that they had Googled an applicant or visited their social networking profiles.” Some seniors found that statistic surprising low.
“That really seems kind of low. That’s surprising. I don’t know, I would have expected more colleges and universities to be jumping on that train of checking kids’ social media because it’s a big part of who people are today. People are constantly connected,” said senior Scott Kamp.
How do you keep your account safe from colleges? Simple! Just clean it up! You don’t want to put pictures that could potentially put you at risk of not getting accepted to your number one school.
Senior Olivia Higgins weighed in on the topic, stating that it’s important to “clean it [social media] up because it’s a good tool for the application people for college to see what you are actually like.”
Whether you’re private user or not, the scary fact is that the Internet is not safe. With the recent iCloud scandal over the summer, it has made a lot of us ask an important question: Does privacy exist anymore? Ultimately, it is all about how you want people to perceive you.
According to junior Nate Ryan, “If you’re going to put something out there, it should be something you want to reflect positively on yourself. You don’t want to say anything that’s going to have a negative reflection.”
Bottom line is, when it comes to social media, it is extremely important to put your best foot forward because you don’t know who could be looking at your profile.
