From March 1st to 6th, the Scituate High School Model United Nations club traveled to San Francisco to attend a conference. The host of the conference was University of California Berkeley, and the conference is the oldest Model United Nations (MUN) conference in the world. For its 65th session, nearly two thousand students from across the globe attended the conference to debate current issues or historical issues dating back to the 1600s. For three days, delegates attended sessions to debate their country or person’s view on the topic at hand. Working together with other delegates with similar positions, students then wrote resolution papers that would be presented in front of the entire committee and voted to be passed or denied.

In the two days before the conference started, SHS students visited many landmark sights in the Bay Area. Immediately off the plane, students were shuttled across the Golden Gate Bridge to an overlook that offered scenic photos with the bridge and bay in the background. From there, students headed to a small seaside town called Sausalito to get lunch and enjoy the views of downtown San Francisco. A quick visit to a beach allowed students to take a swim in the Pacific ocean and enjoy views of the Golden Gate Bridge while basking in the sun. The next day, students took a bus trip around San Francisco while stopping in Chinatown, Ghirardelli Square, Pier 39, and Fisherman’s Wharf. Sightseeing in San Francisco allowed students to take in the feel of the city and capture plenty of photos to bring home.

At the end of three days of hard work, three students from Scituate were awarded with research awards: Meg Kelly, Julia Pasini, and Emily O’Connor. The trip was very well attended by SHS with 44 students going and will surely be a fond memory for all those who attended.
