Ball is life, but who is there to make sure there is a ball in your life? Athletic director Mr. Cash. Unfortunately, Mr. Cash will be retiring this year. Principal Wargo is taking this opportunity to restructure the athletic director position to be more cost efficient while still meeting the administrative needs of SHS.
“There are many different models. There aren’t many pure full-time athletic directors that only focus on athletics with secretarial support,” said Mr. Wargo. Reorganizing the position prompts a few questions: What can we do with less?
Mr. Wargo has considered rolling the position into the assistant principal’s job. According to Mr. Wargo, SHS administrators are lucky because there aren’t a lot of disciplinary problems, which minimizes the assistant principal’s work.
“I don’t think it would make much of a difference having an athletic director with multiple roles as long as they’re doing their job,” said sophomore Nick Basler, who participates in football and track.
“I think we would get more recognition because assistant principals are more connected to students,” said Senior Kendra Miller, who has been a long-time member of the SHS swim team.
Although Mr. Wargo realizes that changing the role of the athletic director will be challenging, he looks forward to working with Michelle Patterson, the current athletic director’s secretary. Mr. Wargo said Patterson knows the “ins-and-outs of running an athletic program,” and she has been a great help in building the program. “Without that, I would never move forward with this model,” said Mr. Wargo.
With the proposal on the table and the experience and knowledge of many school models, next year looks to be a new beginning for the athletic program at Scituate High School.
