As the 2012-2013 school year begins, there are high hopes for the fall sport teams. The Sailors endured a trying pre-season, and as the games begin the community is ready for another successful season. From field hockey to football, players, coaches and captains had much to say about the goals for their team.
Soccer:
B. After a successful season last year, the boys soccer team is ready to get back on the field and show fans and Scituate High School what they’re made of. Varsity soccer coach, Mr. Forde, has high expectations for this year. Coach Forde said, “with hard work and dedication I believe that we can have a very successful season.”
The three senior captains for the 2012 season are Joe Daileader, Chris DeAngelo and Greg Logue. After last years record of 10-3-4, DeAngelo said, “we’re hoping to improve this year and hopefully win the championship.” Both DeAngelo and Daileader agree that Brendan O’Neil, now at Mass Maritime Academy and Harry Berton, now at Northeastern University were two terrific soccer players during past seasons and will be missed this year. Daileader said, “I make a good captain because I am hard-working, I have a good sense of humor and I lead by example.” With fantastic leadership and a great team, boys Scituate soccer has a bright future.
G: The girls soccer team ended last year on a great note, and are expecting to find success this 2012 fall season. Already 2-0 the team, according to senior captain Katelyn Fougere is “still young, but we have speed and play well together.” Senior Julianna Drew said “We have great leaders this year, they are assertive, but nice about it and they always know what to do.” This tri-captains include Fougere, senior Hannah Hoffman and senior Rachel Sandham. The team has set high goals for this season as Hoffman said “We’d like to win the league again.” Coach Maki also has high hopes for the team. “I’m excited, and very optimistic that we’ll do well this year. We have lots years,” he said. “As high as the expectations were last year, they are even higher for this year.” This upcoming season should prove a successful one for the girls soccer team, so keep an eye on the lady Sailors.
Football:
Starting off the 2012 football season, fans and players are looking forward to a successful and rowdy season. The four senior captains are, John Foster, Dante Sacchitella, Mike Stewart and Jack White. After speaking with each of these captains, they have different goals and hopes for this season. Foster said he is “looking forward to working with the team towards the playoffs and hopefully championship.” All the captains seem to agree with the hope of making it to the championship. White joked that he is “looking forward to Coach Byrnes inspirational speeches.” Sacchitella added that “Matt King, now at Mass Maritime Academy, Lucas Barisano, now at the University of Tampa and Frank Russo, now at Anna Maria College are all great players that will be missed this year.” Stewart said that he makes a good captain because of his “experience and determination to football.”
Athletic Director, Mr. Cash added that this team “is truly one of the best football teams we’ve had here at Scituate High School.” With high hopes and excitement from Scituate, the 2012 boys of Scituate football are ready to show the Patriot League that they are champions.
Field Hockey: Starting Coach Amanda Bird’s fourth year as the varsity field hockey coach the lady Sailors are 4-1-2. Senior Lizzy Doherty said, “This is the best team we’ve seen so far since Ms. Bird has been coaching. We all work together well with her coaching style.” The girls team had a successful season last year, and though losing many seniors including Maggie Travers, now playing at Stonehill College, they are still hoping to be even more successful this year. Leading the way are the starting forward line, senior Nicole Begnal, senior Sarah Hoffman and senior Zoe Ryan. The strong defense is lead by senior Molly Driscoll and sophomore Molly McConahue. Captains include Begnal, Hoffman and senior mid-fielder Melissa Harris.
Coach Bird said, “So far, so good, the team looks great. They are already playing as one cohesive unit and there is lots of team building outside of field hockey. Communication is awesome and this season should be good.”
Golf: The SHS golf team tends to be overlooked as a fall sport, but these athletes finished with a 500 record and hope to do the same, or better this 2012-2013 season. The team will miss Mary Mulchaey and Jack O’Donahue III, both players who graduated last year, but it’s looking good all the same. The captains this year are senior Connor Gibbons, and senior Tucker Cisseau. Underclassmen have brought some new attributes to the team.“We have some new players, specifically one freshman girl that is very skilled,” said senior Ryan Najarian. The team’s work ethic is not overlooked as there has been much improvement by players who continued putting, chipping and driving throughout the offseason. Catch a match at Widow’s Walk during the week and cheer on the golf team.
Cheerleading:
The SHS cheerleaders hope to become a presence on the sidelines and as a sports team. With their new uniforms and new stunt team, they hope to become something for the fans to enjoy, especially during half time. Senior captains, Colby Callahan and Cara Gaziano are both great leaders and have high hopes for the new team. Callahan said, “I really hope that we do well during the pep rally this year and make fans at the football game excited to watch us perform.” Graziano added, “I want to make practices effective and I want to focus on improving routines. I think I make a good captain because I’m open-minded and I can relate to everyone.” Remember Scituate, get your blue, black and white and get ready to watch Scituate fight.
Cross Country: Most people think Cross Country is all about running, but Coach McCarthy knows that this year’s team will find success because of their “speed, strength and endurance.” The team is carrying seventy five people which is the most they have carried in years, and the first meet not a single one ran the junior varsity course, showing that they were not intimidated by the three mile run. Senior leaders this year include, Bridget Burke, Alece Demetriades, Shia Palmer, Elizabeth Tedeschi and Tess Walter. Senior boy leaders are Andrew Don, Ben Garmen, Evan Geary, Andrew Linker, Billy Russell and Paul Svenson. Palmer, a year-round runner, said, “This is the most fun season, we are like a family. We work hard, but have a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to my last season.” Two standouts are junior Carly Martin and junior Jake Renolds.
