Student protests are a great way for kids to get involved and make a difference in their communities–regardless of their political beliefs. I was one of the organizers of Scituate High School’s student-led walkout, and it makes me feel really proud to raise awareness.

I’m a transfer student from Wilton, Connecticut, where I lived for 16 years. I will always remember Sandy Hook. I lived 15-20 minutes away from Newtown, Connecticut, and the December 14, 2012, shooting will always haunt me. If people have stories like I do, they have the right to speak their voice!

The students at Scituate High School had a choice–to walk out of the building during our second period class, or not walk out. Either way, we showed respect to any of the opinions. In times like these, it is the students who will bring change, and that is what makes it empowering! We are fed up, and we deserve to feel safe in our schools.
