As televisions blast the ever so corny back to school shopping commercials and students procrastinate the last minute schoolwork to savor their last few summer days, its obvious that time of year is back. It’s bittersweet, our vacation has come to an end but a whole new school year is beginning. As much as students hate to admit it, a little part of each and every one of us is eager to go back.
Twitter buzzes with anxious tweets about new schedules. Instead of tanning at the beach, girls are hustling through malls shopping for not just the first day, but first week of school outfits. They’re not alone, as the guys search online for the ‘freshest’ new sneakers. The last week of August approached and fall sport athletes were nervous but excited to begin tryouts and practice for the upcoming season. Teens no longer need to dedicate ‘Throwback Thursday’ pictures to friends they haven’t seen much of this summer since we will see everyone soon enough.
For the upperclassmen veterans, it’s pretty much the similar repeated process every year, but what about the freshmen? Surely they must fear the stereotypical problems such as getting beat up in the bathrooms and stuffed into lockers. Just kidding, it’s the twenty first century. But in all seriousness, with a new school comes new adventures.
A newbie to Scituate High School, freshman Will McCarry, is “pumped to go back to school to see friends and meet new teachers. Overall, I think it’s going to be fun.” That’s the spirit students of all ages are pretty much flaunting already.
Senior Charlotte Carr said she couldn’t wait, “I’m excited for my senior year and finishing everything I’ve started here at SHS.”
We mustn’t forget the little first day traditions of Scituate High School. Smelling the fresh scent of the somewhat clean lockers, besides maybe a wad of gum or two, and reuniting with your homeroom.
Going back to school opens a whole new window of opportunity, a brand new chance to recreate yourself with new goals and aspirations. Yeah, we can complain about the fast approaching halt to our precious beach days, but we’ll be crying even more in our thirties when we look back at this time of fun, youth and endless memories. So here’s to the 2013-2014 school year. Let’s live it up girls and boys.
