Many people often attach the term paparazzi to words such as invasive, rude, and even unnecessary. The paparazzi often fill pages of magazines with endless pictures of celebrities personal lives, but is this necessarily wrong?
Many will often say that the paparazzi are bad for society because they make up false headlines about others’ lives. But, the truth is that the paparazzi take the picture, they don’t make up the story; that’s up to the tabloids. Yes, you could argue that they play a role in this negative cycle, because they sell the pictures to the tabloids. Still, think twice before you say this because you are only adding to the same cycle when you buy one of the infamous gossip magazines.
It’s also argued that the paparazzi often invade celebrities’ privacy. You need to remember folks that these complaining celebrities do open their lives up to us already. Every day we get countless tweets, Instagram pictures, and even Facebook statuses keeping us up to date on celebrities. As consumers we are engrossed in their lives because they let us get this way.
From their food choices to daily outfit choices we just can’t seem to get enough. If celebrities open up this much of their lives to their fans, why isn’t it okay to want to know a little bit more? Junior Katherine Powers agreed that the paparazzi are good, and said they are there “to give the American public an insight to what celebrities and athletes lives are like.” Paparazzi are beneficial simply because they keep us updated on the lives that these people care to share with us. Celebrities can’t expect to fill our daily news feeds with their personal information and want us not to know more.
After all, it’s just a picture. The paparazzi are just doing their job, the job that we endorse through purchasing these pictures. There is no law saying that it is illegal to take someone’s picture when they are in public, so the argument is not valid that it is technically “an invasion of privacy.” Sophomore Katy Clark agreed and said the paparazzi is good “because they keep you updated with what’s going on in celebrities lives.”
Often criticized for their bad nature, paparazzi now seem to be gaining recognition in the public eye. The industry only helps to bring the people what they want, and is not violating any laws in the process.
