Over the past month, the junior prom for the Class of 2027 has undergone some changes due to conflicts over the date. Although it was originally planned for the 1st of May at Indian Pond Country Club in Kingston, this year’s prom will now be held on May 15th at Granite Links in Quincy. Although these changes have caused some bumps in the planning process, the Class of 2027 can now look forward to an exciting night at a beautiful venue.
Each year, SHS Student Government officers prepare for prom, which is considered an iconic high school event. During freshman year, elected officers plan events to raise money that will be used for several class events, including prom.
The commitment of time and energy from class officers is substantial, especially considering the busy schedules many officers maintain.
Class President Isabelle (Izzy) Adams is extremely involved in a variety of clubs and sports at Scituate High School. Beyond her role as class president, she is a three-time varsity athlete, a rising junior lacrosse captain, and a leader in many clubs, including Women in Business, School on Wheels, and DECA.
After being elected president in the spring of her freshman year, Adams has worked hard to ensure the Class of 2027 has an exciting prom.
Along with Adams, SHS junior Haley Reynolds, the class vice president, dedicates significant time and effort to organizing events and creating flyers posted on the Class of 2027 Instagram: “We all work together to get everything down pretty equally,” Reynolds said when asked about what it is like to work with the other officers. Reynolds is also a member of the varsity field hockey team and plays varsity tennis in the spring. Outside of school events, she enjoys walking and doing art.
Another officer for the Class of 2027 student government is Jane Griffiths. As secretary, Griffiths spends her time taking notes at meetings, organizing events, and contacting community members and organizations. Additionally, she serves as Co-President of the Community Service Club and attends student council meetings. Lastly, she plays varsity soccer, lacrosse, and track.
Bridget Ryan, the newest addition to this group of officers, is the class treasurer. In this role, she handles deposits and withdrawals of funds for important purchases. Like Adams, Reynolds and Ryan maintains a full schedule: She plays varsity field hockey and lacrosse, and she is the captain of the SHS Debate Team.
The president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer work together to ensure successful class events, and the prom is considered one of their biggest challenges. Working with their class advisors, SHS history teacher Kelly Trayers and SHS English teacher Dana Saunders, class officers are responsible for paying attention to every detail of the prom experience.
Granite Links offers a picturesque golf course and a view of the Boston skyline. According to the class officers, students who attend the prom will enjoy dinner and dancing under a large outdoor tent.
Unfortunately, when the date was changed, some students were concerned because two AP exams will be held on the same day: The AP Environmental Science exam is scheduled for the morning, and the AP Computer Science exam will be held in the afternoon. Students who are taking AP Computer Science and would like to attend the promenade will have the opportunity to take their exam on a different day.
Noting the benefits of holding this year’s prom on May 15th, Ryan stated, “Exams will be over and stress will be gone, so we can enjoy the night.”
