If you’ve recently driven through the harbor, you may have noticed that the building that once housed the Atlantic Driving School now boasts a new banner advertising, Mama Micki’s, an all-natural organic bakery. Nothing is better than a nice, warm, chocolate chip cookie. But this quirky little bakery has been predicted to put a whole new spin on baked goods.
First off, what is a gluten free product anyway? Gluten free products are normally foods that are free of wheat, barley, and rye. Knowing this tidbit of information, the next plausible question is how in the world can you bake a cookie (or any other baked good for that matter) without those essential products? According to owner Micki Appleby, it’s quite easy to make an organic and gluten-free treat that also tastes amazing.
In 2002, Appleby opened her first bakery, Mama Micki’s Fine Desserts. Running the bakery from her home, it stayed open until 2007 when she closed the bakery to take care of her ill mother. “When I was taking care of her, I changed my diet because I wanted to feel better, lose some weight and become healthier as I hit 50,” Appleby said. “I stopped eating refined as well as artificial sugars and started eating organically. I had one cochlear implant at the time and I struggled to understand words. When I changed my diet my hearing improved dramatically. It really showed me that we are what we eat!”
Keeping this sentiment in mind, Appleby decided to open Mama Micki’s All Natural Bakery in 2011, which she originally ran out of her house. While Appleby also sells traditional products made with wheat, eggs, and butter, she also has two other unique lines of baked goods: gluten free (wheat-free, eggs and butter) and vegan (wheat but no animal products, so no eggs or butter). The Scituate Harbor location will be Appleby’s first official bakery run outside of her home. Hoping to open by the end of December, she expects to sell products that go beyond the standard chocolate chip cookies and croissants.
“The bakery will offer many options but all of them will be made with organic and all natural ingredients,” said Appleby. “You might find a traditional (organic eggs and butter) banana cake with chocolate buttercream icing, or a vegan French apple tart or a gluten-free double chocolate mint brownie.” Sounds yummy!
Many high school students remain unaware of the coming establishment, but the unique menu will definitely offer many options for health snack seeking students. “I would definitely go there,” said junior Caroline Kiddie. “It’s healthier and I really enjoy organic food. I think it’s a cute new addition to Scituate.”
So if you’re in the market for a gluten free biscotti, or you just want to try something new, make sure to check out Mama Micki’s when they open this December!
