The secret world of girls has now been revealed by the new MTV show, Girl Code. The show discusses topics that are relevant to girls today. Girl Code is breaking down barriers for girls to be more open about themselves and how they feel. If you don’t want to watch sports- don’t. Girl Code empowers females and gives them comedic advice on life as a girl in the twenty-first century where relationships are tested by social media and where jobs are scarce.
Girl Code is comprised of fourteen girls and five guys that weigh in on different topics. Each person is a known comedian, and hilarious in their own right. Some of the topics include relationship advice or just general life advice like how to score a job that you want. Each person weighs in on how they think any girl should act, or do, or say in order to get what she wants.
Each comedian on Girl Code has their different personalities. Jessimae Peluso has more of a vulgar comedic stance while Nicole Byer is unapologetically honest about some of the struggles of being a female. Each person picked to be on the show must be in the comedic field. The girls are much funnier than the guys featured on the sho, much because the guys are unneeded on a show called Girl Code.
I blame having guy on a show named Girl Code on the media.. Girls should not have to depend on guys for advice, just other girls. Guys could not possibly know struggles that girls go through, and vice versa. Guys are an unneeded, sexist element to Girl Code, seeing as if the show is about girls; it should only be other girls giving advice rather than guys giving advice for girls just to fit their ideals.
This does not mean that guys in the public do not watch this. Girl Code has attracted a bigger audience than the show Guy Code on MTV2. This is not surprising since Girl Code was much more advertised and girls really do have their own world, like a list of unspoken rules. Guys are much more up front, while girls have secret agreements within each other. Guys could never figure out what these rules are, so by watching the show they see a little piece of the world of girls. Junior Mitchell Loring said, “I think it’s a really well done show, I like the topics they choose to talk about and it’s fun to watch because of what they talk about so honestly. It gives a look into what girls are actually thinking.”
Although in some aspects, Girl Code does contain slight sexism, it also has great advice for girls in most aspects of life. With a comedic edge, Girl Code gives funny advice on some serious issues and always seems to brighten my day.
